Yeah, I don't think I agree with that.
It's not whether they exist.
It's having too much power.
It's being able to turn economic power into political power.
And then using that power to get even more wealth.
That's why people are so furious because they see that happening and are not wrong.
And the role of money in our politics is just one example, probably the biggest example of how that can happen.
I think Americans wouldn't mind people being as wealthy as they are nearly as much if we didn't have the inequality that we have.
And if we didn't have some of those people using their wealth
to assert political power in a country whose whole founding principle is that the millionaire, or I guess billionaire, stands in line next to the dishwasher and the taxi driver in the voting booth and they all have the same political power.
How do you lift people?
I actually think the ideas for fixing those economic problems aren't that radical.
The weird thing is in order to get what I think of as very reasonable economic ideas through, you have to have radical change on the political side.
Economically, we can do this mostly with tools that are very familiar to us.
Make sure that there are higher tax rates, not to punish the wealthy, but to get enough revenue to do so government can do its job.
Make sure there are higher tax rates on the – not on all Americans compared to today, but on the corporate profits and on the wealthiest individuals.
Make sure that it is harder to hide and move around money so that you never have to pay taxes on it at all.
And then what do you do with that money?
You make sure there's a healthcare system where, for example, somebody in the situation you are in still gets to be an entrepreneur because they don't actually have to worry that they won't have healthcare if they don't just take the next low-wage job available to them.
Invest in education enough that we are preparing for people who know not just how to work but how to think so that when work changes, they're ready.
