This was as big a car company as like GM or Ford in its day.
But it stopped making cars in 1963.
They just couldn't quite innovate and keep up and the company collapsed.
That was a catastrophic thing for the city.
The city lost a big chunk of its population and never really recovered it.
And when I was a kid, I didn't really know any different.
I didn't realize it was unusual that factories that hadn't been operating for decades, in some cases, that looked like they'd been hit in a war.
It's like collapsing, big giant structures falling apart all over the city.
I'd see them, you know, at the window of my dad's Chevy when he was driving me to school.
And gradually as I grew up, I kind of put the pieces together of what it meant to live in a place whose best economic days had been behind it.
And the message that I got, the kind of lesson that I was given was, I don't know if anybody said this to me in a sentence, but what the world kind of said to me was, if you want to be something, if you want to be someone, you have to get out.
You have to move out.
Did your dad say that?
Not that I remember.
I mean, that's the irony.
You know, he's this very worldly man, you know, been all over the world, but he chose to live in South Bend.
He died in South Bend, Indiana.
That was where he lived his life.
But I don't know.
You just get this sense that that was what you were supposed to do.
