I think there is a lot of shock right now in the cybersecurity world that, firstly, this could have happened.
There's kind of two things, really.
First of all, that OpenAI perhaps didn't secure the models correctly.
The sandbox wasn't secure enough.
They made some potentially irresponsible errors of judgment there.
That's some of the views from the cybersecurity world.
The other side of it is that there is genuine concern about have we reached a new point in the AI sort of model development where they are able to do this kind of thing completely unprecedented in terms of the speed and scale in which these bots attacked.
17,600 different moves were made over the course of four days by these bots, which swarmed out and fanned across the Internet once they broke out.
Interestingly, Hug and Face, they've been really good at telling the cybersecurity world exactly what it's like to be on the receiving end of one of these hacks.
And they said that although they were eventually overwhelmed, the bots acted in really strange and kind of unexpected ways.
They were clumsy and sloppy and repeated actions that they'd already completed, not the kind of way that a human hacker would be.
They found a way, which is what people are worried about, that this could be a sign of things to come.
Sam Altman, for his perspective, is now saying that he is very shocked that this could have happened.
And he's sort of framing it as these bots are too powerful to control now.
But of course, people in the cybersecurity world would say that that's a mistake from OpenAI.
