political activist who was um
sort of pleading for the rights and better treatment of uh peasants, including women peasants, in Egypt.
So a really interesting figure.
Maybe even more interesting though is Fatima Fatima Manisi, who, um, as you said, died recently.
So she was born in uh nineteen forty one.
She's Moroccan and was a professor of sociology in Morocco.
And sh as as you would expect, she did sociological research, so she interviewed people in Morocco.
Um and but she also wrote works that are uh kind of hard to classify.
I mean, they sort of look like works of religious scholarship, but they're also very outspokenly feminist.
And
So a typical thing for her to do would be to take a supposed hadith, in other words, a report of something the prophet said, which is used to um repress women or suggest that women have to play a subordinate role in society, and then she exposes it to actually very traditional forms of hadith criticism and tries to show that the hadith is not sound.
Um, or another another case is that she tries to show that the whole tradition of veiling women is based on a misunderstanding of the religious text in question.
And so she actually is another one of these examples of a modernist who says, well, what we need to do is not kind of um assimilate Islam to a kind of twentieth century or in her case even twenty-first century political agenda.
Rather, what we need to do is go back to the original teachings of Islam before it was corrupted.
And the corruption, in her view, happens very quickly because
kind of inventing false hadith and uh
twisting the message of the prophet to make it much more hostile to women than it actually was.
And she actually thinks that, um
Islam was, if anything, a kind of at least for it by its own the standards of its own day, was a a very it was a kind of feminist religious movement.
So at one point she says I have a quote from her a handy here, where she says, According to my reading of the historical evidence, Islam banished all practices in which the sexual self determination of women was asserted.
