So in other words, um

The uh the the the way that Islam kind of came in as a social structure on top of the original uh revelation was to um was was really motivated by

Uh what she even calls fear of women.

So their fear of their independence, fear of them as sexual beings.

But Islam itself originally, um, as she says, does not advance the thesis of women's inherent inferiority.

So she thinks that there's she tries to um show a kind of break between the prophet's original message and the way that it was understood in later traditions.

And like I say, it's interesting that she um uses the technique.

techniques of traditional hadith scholarship and religious scholarship to do that.

Um obviously I'm not really like in a position to judge how convincing any of this is because I'm not an expert on um Islamic uh religious sciences.

I'm an expert on the history of philosophy to the extent that I'm an expert on anything.

But I I think it's interesting, right?

And it's it's interesting to see how she carries on an older tradition of women

being engaged in the religious sciences, but now for this like really explicitly feminist purpose.

Sure.

Well, I I mean, obviously I'm always doing my like real research.

Um, and in fact, s one thing I'm doing is um is uh running a research project here in Munich on the reception of Avicenna in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, which I started thinking about in part from working on the podcast, actually.

Because I thought, oh, there's a there's a huge amount of text here that needs to be worked on and isn't being worked on.

I'm also running a big

research project funded by the ERC on animals in philosophy in the Islamic world, which is uh really, really interesting.
