But crucially, Bell can say that, unlike the mysteries of religion, the evil of persecution really is obvious.
He's just presented a very straightforward argument to show why it inevitably leads to unjustified mutual violence.
So anyone who reflects, and especially anyone who has read Bail, should abandon the judgment of conscience that tells them to oppress others, and they will be blameworthy if they fail to do so.
So there you have it.
This was episode one in the series on the history of atheistic philosophy without any gaps.
And it certainly won't be the last one.
But it was also episode four hundred and ninety-nine in the original series of the history of philosophy in general, which means that next time we'll be celebrating a big milestone.
When I started this project, I remember hesitating whether to number the first ever episode 01 or 001, and I went with the latter thinking that I might well get up to a hundred episodes, or even more, so I would eventually need three digits.
To put it mildly, I was underestimating the scope of the task.
I never dreamed I'd be getting up to 500 episodes, and still less that I would get that far and still be nowhere near the end.
But, believe it or not, that's going to happen next time, in honor of which I'll be releasing no fewer than five interviews over the course of two weeks.
These special episodes will cover topics I missed out along the way.
As it happens, one of them will be about Zoroastrianism, which involves dualist ideas similar to the Manichaean theory we just looked at in this episode.
After this celebratory miniseries, it will be on to episode five hundred and one, in which Baal expert Mara van Daluk will be helping us dig deeper into the problem of evil in Bale and the philosophy of pessimism.
Not the most obete way to begin our second 500 episodes, admittedly.
But on the bright side, the upcoming interviews should help to make this project a little bit more like a history of philosophy without any gaps.
