Fuel is their single biggest cost, and that has doubled.
Many of them are hedged.
That means they buy it in advance, which means they are in some way protected.
Some of them aren't.
That means they're facing huge bills that could run into the billions over the course of the next couple of years.
That is an enormous cost.
And if they can't pass that on through higher fares or potentially cutting unprofitable routes, many of them are going to lose lots of money.
That might push some of them over the edge.
That's a question for people who own airlines rather than me.
Many businesses are terrible.
Making cars is a terrible business.
Owning sports teams are terrible businesses.
But there is something of a kind of luster about these things and a glamour to having an airline.
You know, Richard Branson has never made money on Virgin Atlantic except in one year.
And yet he still does it.
People love something about flying and about owning an airline, which, to be fair, is not something you or I ever probably have to worry about owning.
The way the low-cost carrier operates is they strip out absolutely everything except the bare essentials.
You won't get free food.
You won't have fancy TV showing you the latest films.
You will typically have slightly less room than you would.
