We're talking about Paramount, which of course has Paramount Plus, CBS, of course the studio, and Warner Brothers Discovery with Discovery Plus, HBO Max, all of this under the same corporate ownership and create a position where between basic cable, streaming, and traditional movies, consumers are going to be put in a position where they could increase prices and
kind of benefit from the lack of the overall competition in the marketplace.
Movies and TV shows are not run of the mill commodities.
They filed this lawsuit last week and they argued a judge has to move quickly on this because it's possible that this deal closes any day now.
They even warned in filings that this deal could close as soon as Wednesday.
Like the federal government said this is fine.
And yeah, Brad, the Department of Justice signed off on this merger back in June.
The Department of Justice ultimately saying they didn't think this deal was going to harm competition.
But a lot of people raised doubts about that claim, that this idea that this $111 billion mega deal would be good for competition in any way.
This is going to definitely reduce the number of films made.
No matter what they say, they're going to reduce the number of films.
Yeah, so it's kind of a potentially sweet deal for both sides here, where the owners of Paramount, the Ellisons, are able to get a green light from the Department of Justice, the Department of Justice, which under a Democratic administration might have been much more skeptical to this deal.
And also the White House potentially has one of these big media companies that looks upon them perhaps more favorably.
Especially a company that when you look at their media ownings would have control over both CBS and CNN, two of the country's largest news organizations.
How does Paramount respond to that?
Paramount categorically denies the idea of any kind of political involvement, any kind of sweetheart deal here.
And when it comes to the actual lawsuit, it's worth noting that the heart of this case, it's really a basic antitrust case separate.
