So it didn't just change the way that people behaved.
It actually changed the nature of the whole British population.
Hundreds of thousands of men who were the best of their generations of every class were just mown down by German machine gun fire and eaten by rats before they could marry and have children.
And this affects the country.
You have similar catastrophic effects, of course, in the European countries.
They're not quite the same because of the volunteer nature of the British Army.
I'm absolutely sure that the post-1917 Civil War in Russia either drove out of the country or killed huge numbers of the best people.
And it made it very, very difficult.
And then the great purges of Stalin.
by their nature also selected the best people.
So you do make it difficult for a country to recover when you kill so many of your best.
Yeah, but propaganda can be very effective if it's well-aimed and if it targets the right discontents.
And a lot of German people were simply told that this period of unemployment and chaos and fighting in the streets must come to an end.
And they were told, we are the people who will do it.
And in many cases, they didn't ask too many questions about how it would be done.
In many cases, you can easily understand
how people you know could have done that, I think.
People pretend now that they would all have seen it coming, but from what we know, I'm fairly sure quite a lot would not.
There is nothing wrong with self-interest.
