People don't realize now just how much people believed in the strength, the military strength of France in 1939.
They thought that it was colossal and unchallengeable, this vast army which had been victorious in 1918 and was the army of a great power.
and valorous country.
They were amazed that it collapsed.
It was like some great cathedral being wiped off the map.
People had no idea this could conceivably happen.
And we certainly didn't.
We were left with a war which we were not equipped to fight.
And so we ended up handing over the war to other people.
We handed over the war to the Soviet Union and to the United States.
And we were on the winning side, but in my view, we were not the victims.
Oh, that the gravest mistake ever made by any British government was to enter the First World War in 1914.
We should never have done that.
There was no reason why we needed to, and many, many reasons why we should not have done.
It cost us almost everything we had, and we continue to pay the price for it.
Well, at the beginning of World War I, we were a creditor country.
We had huge foreign investments.
We spent what we earned, and we had, as it were, savings as a nation.
We were also a stable, more or less contented country.
I mean, there were problems, problems with Ireland and a number of other things, but we were a solid society, likely to last.
