Don't just vote Tory because you want a Tory government, because you won't get a Tory government.

One of the points I can make now more clearly than then was actually Gordon Brown was probably more conservative than David Cameron, particularly on things like the European single currency.

And it was and is a more conservative person.

But I was just trying to say, no, it's vital that this doesn't succeed.

And I couldn't get anybody to listen to me.

And I remember going around some other supposedly right-wing columnists and saying, if I keep saying this alone, I'll get nowhere.

If anybody else joins in, it might actually make some impact.

And they wouldn't.

And it was at that point that I despaired.

And once the Cameron government came into office and everybody imagined that the Tories had won the election, which they hadn't even done, and the coalition settled in, I thought, that's it.

It's not the word I'd choose.

It's dispiriting.

But for me, what it is above all, because I have that kind of temperament, it's infuriating.

And there are two ways of reacting to it if you're furious.

And one is just to have total contempt ever afterwards for everything, everybody involved in what resulted from what I tried to prevent.

So I do.

I think so.

I think it might have been avoidable.

It would have been worth trying.

I think 2010 was the last moment at which it might have been doable.
