I was listening to a conversation, Jay, between a couple of our friends over at the Bulwark, some former Republicans who have now sort of joined our side of the aisle because they're very anti-Trump and they recognize how depraved the Republican Party has become.
You're reminding me, one of my fun facts at cocktail parties is that Joan Didion was once a big old conservative.
Folks don't realize she actually got her start writing for the National Review.
She would have weekly martini parties with William F. Buckley.
They were very close friends.
And one of the things, and she's talked over, I think she's still alive.
I don't know.
I think she's done.
No, she's passed away.
Rest in peace, Joan Didion.
But one of the things that she's talked about openly is that one of the radicalizing factors in her ultimately coming over to the left was twofold.
One was she thought Ronald Reagan was a fruit.
And two, she thought Newt Gingrich was a fat, tacky slob, and she was just so personally off-put by his demeanor, his slobbishness, that that turned her into a Democrat.
We were chatting about this, Jay, with, oh gosh, I think Jennifer Welch of the I've Had It podcast earlier this week.
Shout out Jennifer Welch.
We love Jennifer.
She's the best.
But we were chatting about how what I've had it with is Republicans who finally
find their goddamn spine once they already have one foot out the door.
