I can buy with credit, just the same as buying with money.
And so what you really need to do to slow inflation is you've got to stop the expansion of the money supply and contract credit.
And interest rates never rose high enough
To do that, had interest rates gotten high enough, let's say rates got to 10% or 12%, people might have said, I'm not going to borrow that much.
I'm going to save.
I'm going to put my money in the bank.
I'm going to get some of that 10% yield.
We never got rates high enough to cause consumers to change their preferences from consumption to savings.
And the government never cut back.
The government didn't look at high interest rates and say, oh, we got to cut back on spending here.
We can't borrow at these rates.
The Fed, for political reasons, kept rates artificially low.
But they had to pretend that they were fighting inflation.
They couldn't admit that they're not.
So they talk about how we're fighting inflation.
That's what Warsh is doing now.
He's trying to get some credibility by talking about, you know, how much he's going to fight inflation, which I thought was funny when Senator Kennedy asked him,
what are you going to do about inflation?
And Walsh says, well, I've street things I'm going to do.
And it amounted to nothing because it was all talking about it.
