very very challenging training and one of the things I'd reflect on is it really was the first time in my life I really got pushed mentally and physically to my limits and realised that they were a lot bigger than I might have imagined they were and that was really helpful through COVID because I had been stress tested really quite significantly during that training.

There's something about the physical with the psychological testing, isn't there?

There's something about that combo that's pretty profound.

It is, yes.

It really is.

And I found I was pretty good on the physical side.

I've always been quite fit.

And actually, I had deliberately got fit because I knew I was coming in off what was called civvy street, so I hadn't had any training.

So I had a lot of catching up to do.

And so...

I got as fit as I could so that I would at least be able to handle the physical side of things but they really, I mean they set out to really push you beyond your limits and that was a great growth experience and I loved my time in the Territorials too, I chose to be an infantry officer rather than get commissioned in the Medical Corps and I loved that.

Is there a story from that time that was formative for you or that encapsulates the territorials and what you gained from that?

oh probably lots of stories some i could repeat my father's i had a i had a year olivia and i did our first health surgeon years up in whangarei which was fabulous we learned a lot medical wise and loved living up there and i was in the territories up there and of course the soldiers from around the northland region to tai tokere were pretty good and i can remember one night i was their platoon commander and of course most of them were older than me and way more experienced

And we were out on exercise one weekend and we were camping up for the night and I said, guys, if you don't want to put your hoochies up, little tent thing, just, you know, that's fine.

We'll just, the weather's looking pretty good.

They all looked at me and then proceeded to put their hoochies up.

And of course, you can imagine in the morning, when at three o'clock in the morning, it started raining, they were all nice and dry and I wasn't.

So it was a good lesson to me, actually.

They had quite good knowledge and wisdom, which I knew anyway, but a lot of fun times.

Yeah, a lot of fun times, but also it felt like being part of something, you know, the Territorials and New Zealanders.
