So it's not like being in a country perhaps that's closer to the action.

But many of those guys, including the guys I did my training with, stayed and did end up being deployed to East Timor or to the Middle East on peacekeeping operations and so on.

So there was a real aspect to it.

Yeah, a sense of purpose.

You didn't think you had enough going on with med school and marriage, and you thought, no, no, I'll just keep the territorials going as well?

Well, this was pre-children, so, you know, I had time to do anything, really.

Yeah, yeah.

My dad avoided conscription, like the compulsory military training.

He was like, no, there's no way, but then joined the territorials and still speaks of that time very, very fondly.

Do you think that was like I want to ask what kind of a leader was your dad and what kind of a leader are you?

Well, my dad was a really interesting mix because, as I said, he could be quite stern and firm.

And he didn't sort of suffer, you know, not so much fools but BS.

You know, he would call that very quickly.

But on the other hand, he was extremely focused on the welfare of his soldiers.

And he would – you know, one of the stories he told was –

when you're out in the field once a day you get a hot meal he said the first time he was out there as a company commander or maybe probably a company commander or battalion commander they arrived out with the meals and he said they pulled out plates for the officers and the the rest of the the ORs as they're called other ranks had their mess tins and my father said no no no no

we either are all eating off plates or we all eat off mess tins but you know we don't we're out in the field here people and he was so he would and he would if his if they had to march 20 miles he would march with them and he prided himself that he was one of the best always in the top five on the shooting when they were at the range

So he was very, and I think this reflected his background, and he'd come off the shop floor as a mechanic, so he didn't see himself as different or better.

And he always looked after their welfare.

That was foremost for him.
