She was someone, her father was a policeman and by all accounts he was a very stern and quite severe person as well.
And she again left school, as many did in those days, at the end of fifth form school certificate, and shifted to Wellington to train as a schoolteacher, primary school teacher, and that was her career.
Couldn't wait to get back to Wellington, and that's why we ended up back there in 1972.
She was a lovely, warm person, very non-judgmental, strong Christian.
So she brought us all up, which my father wasn't.
He was an atheist, but very respectful of the fact.
And I can remember even living in Napier, we went to Sunday school.
And then when we shifted to Tawa in the early 70s,
Tawa is an interesting place.
It's got, I think, more churches per capita than any part of the country.
It's literally, you drive along the main road of Tawa and there's a church every one or 200 metres.
It's quite stunning.
We were very involved in the Baptist church there, which was quite a remarkable place at the time.
Extremely musical.
And that's what started me on the musical dimension of my life.
So it was quite a privilege there.
So she had a great faith.
She encouraged us in that domain.
But she was just a really warm, huggy, lovely person.
And I admire her because she worked full-time as a schoolteacher and, of course, raised a family.
