My father was busy with his work, plus away weekends with the Territorial.

So she carried quite a load.

And with that went expectations on us as children as well, including pulling our weight around the house.

Favourite chore, least favourite chore?

Well, as I used to say to my children when they were making me grumpy for leaving a mess or not necessarily pulling their weight, I would say, toilets and bathrooms twice a week from age 14, that was me.

You kids don't know how lucky you are.

And there was only one way to clean a toilet and bathroom, and I had been instructed in the way.

With a toothbrush?

Not quite to that extent, but I certainly followed those instructions.

But, you know, my brother, he was on the ironing, and my sister, the vacuuming and dusting, and that's what we had to do because our mum worked full time.

But wonderfully also, as a schoolteacher, she had the school holidays off, so we also had the opportunity to spend lots of lovely family holidays away, mostly Hawke's Bay, where our whānau were from.

Did your parents have high expectations of you as children?

I mean, I'm sure they wanted the best for you.

Yeah, they did.

They gave us opportunities and I'm still not sure how they afforded the fees for Scott's College and our sister going to Queen Margaret College in Wellington.

And I think it was one of the main reasons my mother shifted from Redwood School in Tawa to become a primary school teacher at Scott.

So they headhunted her, but it meant that the fees were then cut in half and that helped a lot.

But certainly if it hadn't been for her working, we wouldn't have been able to go there.

So there was every opportunity created, musically, sporting wise, whatever it was.
