As I mentioned earlier on, life expectancy in New Zealand has increased amazingly across all population groups over the last three decades especially.
And some of that is due to improvements in, for example, cancer therapies and access to care and cardiac therapies.
You know, ageing is humankind's greatest achievement, right?
And we should absolutely celebrate that.
It wasn't that long ago that more children died each year than adults.
And so this is a profound switch.
So we also need to be open and honest about what ageing means, particularly for our country, because it does have significant impacts on the affordability of income for people, the affordability of health care.
because we know age is the greatest risk factor for those common diseases heart disease musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis cancers the biggest risk factor for most cancers is actually age so we're going to get more of them and we need to be really thoughtful about what it is we can afford and make sure we're not spending so much money at that end of life
that we underinvest at the other end of life.
And that's because that's our future, isn't it?
So these are the sort of conversations I think we should be having and thinking about and that our politicians should be leading.
What are you planning?
How are you planning to age?
Are you 60 yet?
Yes, I cracked 60 in March this year.
Congratulations.
And I'm feeling good.
Well, it's just a series of small celebrations through the year.
My wife, Libby, it's later this year.
So we're sort of planning some joint things.
