These are the over 65s.
So it was not a trivial loss for these individuals and their families and these communities.
And we avoided that, which, again, I'm really proud that New Zealanders collectively acted to protect our vulnerable populations, including older people and including our Māori and Pasifika and our disabled people and our people with pre-existing conditions who might have been immunosuppressed because they were on cancer therapy and so on.
Yeah, I mean, I think that's our job is to look after the vulnerable people.
But when they're traditionally, well, maybe when people are vulnerable, sometimes that gets welded to being less valuable, which is a terrible melt.
It is, and that's the measure, isn't it, of a great society or a good society is one where the needs of our most vulnerable are taken into account and prioritised.
Look, I didn't even think we'd talk about COVID that much at all, funnily enough.
And I'm talking to you, but I want to ask, what is it like doing those inquiries?
What is it like going back and thinking about it all and being questioned again?
So I don't get troubled by going back and talking about it or thinking about it.
Some people say they feel a little bit of PTSD or traumatised because I can dissociate it.
I've put it behind me and it's helpful to reflect.
What I am really interested in, though, is that the inquiries are used for a good purpose and that they're not used for political purposes.
In other words, the findings are looked at objectively.
and the lessons are learnt that are both good and perhaps the areas where we could improve and I'm still waiting for that response because at the moment the response has largely been a politicised one and I hope for our country that we can put that to one side and actually reflect on both what we did well and what we
might need to take into the next similar event, whether it's a pandemic or some other threat to our country and what we can build on.
And I think there is plenty we can.
Do you have any ideas about how the people who still feel like they're suffering terribly from as a result of the pandemic and restrictions, do you have any idea how they could heal, how they could reconcile or move on with their lives in a way that
Yeah, they had more of a sense of hope or peace or just healing.
I'm not sure I've got any clever ideas and I'm not sure I'm the best person to offer advice necessarily to that group.
