Doesn't
Yes, of of course that's the you know, that's his view, and you know, he'd say, Well, it's backed up by when I did this in two thousand nineteen twenty, look, inflation remained low.
Well, that's true.
Uh there were many other forces acting on inflation.
If you look at the goods that he actually imposed tariffs on, and he actually started with things like Korean washing machines, they actually went up in price to reflect
the bulk of the tariff.
So the what we economists call the incidence of the tariff demonstrably fell on domestic consumers.
It just turned out in eight in nineteen twenty nineteen specifically, there were enough other influences working to suppress goods price inflation that offset these effects.
And of course the tariff hikes that he put in place then were so much smaller.
They have to make a whole you know, i the i i it's one of these arithmetic projections that one can do by putting together a bunch of different sort of sliding scale pass-through effects and all that.
And and uh you know, I did a uh a very simple calculation that sort of said if you do some plausible pass throughs, there's really two variables here.
You know, one is how much of the tariff gets borne by the foreign producer versus the domestic consumer.
And other, as you mentioned, other pieces in the distributional chain.
So there's clearly some some margin compression that can go on there.
Uh if if you reckon that's around sort of eighty, ninety percent pass through, which seems to be the case of these previous examples.
And then you say, well, what effect does that goods price increase have on the broader economy?
And of course that's really a function of how well the economy is doing.
And let's say at the moment it's doing over
Okay, but not special, if you see what I mean.
So it's not booming.
