We are not averse on this programme to rolling up the sleeves and getting stuck into something complicated.

And by a country mile, the most complicated problem in farming that we address here is how to get younger people taking over the reins.

Generational renewal is the shorthand.

Whenever we have a thorny problem in the ag sector, we like to throw a Nuffield Scholar at it.

Nuffield Scholarship's highly competitive international academic programme in all things rural.

So our reporter, Suzanne Campbell, went in the company of some Nuffield Scholars to Cork to look at a shared farm – fields, fences, sheds and milking parlour owned by a company –

herd of dairy cows and labour provided by a young farmer who doesn't have access to land.

Now, we have explored this model on Countrywide before.

It appears to work, but there are still relatively few older farmers who are happy to hand over their land in this way.

So, what way would the Nuffield scholars tweak it?

On a sunny morning near Bandon in Cork, I'm standing in a field with an international group of Nuffield scholars, looking at dairy cows and learning about share farming.

And what will be that next opportunity for you?

And you brought the cows with you onto the farm.

The farm's land and assets, buildings, parlour are owned by Seánach, but you came with your own cows.

How did you afford to buy the herd?

Sean Deasy, chairman of Chinaka States, outlines what's in it for the landowner.

And it's more of an income for Shinaka States than if you had just leased the farm straight up.

I mean, there's fellows listening to this or women farming who would go, God, you're giving away, though, 40% of the milk check.

Would it be easier to lease?
