The youngest and the fittest men from 1847 on were getting on boats and were leaving or were dying and were just too infirm to be lifting stones?
Exactly.
The culture went with this.
And thankfully, a lot of the culture survived on the East Coast.
I've been lucky enough to have been over on the East Coast of America four times in the last 12 months.
And a lot of this culture survived over there, including the likes of the Bathia Rock, the Irish stick fighting.
A lot of it went with them and stayed with them over there.
Because, like you said, the biggest, fittest and strongest left.
And the culture and the stories went with them.
And that's what it was.
There was this whole severance of culture with the Gertland Moor.
Obviously, there was a succession of famines, but that one being the biggest one.
And a lot of culture died.
A lot of culture died and never came back.
The surprising thing about your book, though, is that while there were plenty of places that you turned up and the people who had been looking at these stones all their lives didn't have a clue what the stones were all about, there was also a lot of places where people knew exactly what they were and they had the stories about those stones.
