Once you understand the underlying mechanisms, you can sort of see how these things are trained up uh in a way that doesn't seem to I don't think many people think large language models are are conscious.

Certainly you don't have to think they're conscious to understand how they're responding.

Um so likewise, I suppose

we have certain forms of behavior in these animals that involve um

responding to s self monitoring as it were and self monitoring and and in some sense building the some kind of internal model of of the self and behavioural responses make reference to that internal model.

No, I don't I I'm not a I'm not a biologist.

I don't know all the the ins and outs of the latest theories of how that self-monitoring works, but I don't see why it couldn't be it couldn't be um purely mechanistic.

But you know, I mean look it he is

while we're on this biological case, I mean, here's another th

issue that I think people aren't focusing on that I'm always trying to press it press.

I think there's a real mystery of why consciousness evolved.

I mean certainly at least maybe there's a bit of a disagreement between us here perhaps, but if you're like me and you do think it's it's conceivable that you can have very complicated, sophisticated behavior without any kind of inner experience

So, you know, I I I think we will have that soon with robots and large language models and so on.

If you could have that in principle.

Why d then there's a mystery of why did natural selection make us conscious?

Right?

Why not 'cause natural selection just cares about behavior because there's only behaviour that makes is relevant for survival and that's what natural selection cares about.

I'm you know, I'm slightly personifying natural selection here for e just for ease of exposition.
