Is it that there's a change of consciousness about what we are permitted in our society to address?

I mean, if I take my point of comparison from being a 20-year-old where no one talked about mental health issues, it just was not part of our lives growing up.

Now it is a huge thing.

Just tease that out a little bit more to explain to us how that's happened.

Is it the use of smartphones that is generating more anxieties or X, Y, and Z?

Or is it that with more information available on smartphones?

I mean, this is a curious point of connection with my world of dealing with legal cases about mass murder, is that one of the debates in my world, it's a parallel to this debate, is whether there are more violations of the law going on around the world now, more crimes against humanity, more genocides, more war crimes.

And my instinct, but it's like your kind of instinct, is that actually that's not the case.

But we know a lot more about what's going on precisely because it's so easy now to communicate information with a smartphone or by other means.

And so things we had no idea about going on around the world when I was studying law and we thought the world was simple and if there was an explosion of horror, it was in one place at one moment.

That was not the case 40 years ago.

And so there is a parallel, I think, in that our state of knowledge has increased dramatically.

Well, I mean, there's just so many different ways to go.

I mean, you wrote the piece in the long read in The Guardian that's also in the book.

Survey in 2019, two thirds of young people in the UK felt they have had a mental disorder.

The choice of words was really interesting.

It's really actually quite powerful and painful listening to you talk about this because I've just been through the experience in the last month of doing a month-long hearing on allegations of genocide in Myanmar, which were in open court for most of the time, but we had three days of witness testimony in the course of which the things that we heard were so terrible that the interpreters...

asked for assistance to deal with what they had just had to interpret and what they had heard.

But within the interpreters, there was a debate as to how best to deal with it.

So this issue that you've just described is very real, not just for children.
