I mean, the Indonesians achieve in a few months what Johnson himself thought that America could set out to do in just a few short years.

You know, there's a coup in Algeria.

There's a coup in Ghana.

All around the world, these regimes are changing, and very often they're leftist or communist regimes that are kind of naturally toppled by progressive pro-American forces.

So all of this encourages Johnson to commit.

So there's not a major difference.

And yeah, I mean, JFK wasn't going to pull out.

And in many ways, Johnson does everything that JFK more likely than not would have done if he'd survived the assassination attempt in Dallas.

I mean, the advisory team remains the same, right?

It's the same people.

So Johnson's a little more hands-on.

But generally speaking, he tends to defer to the advice of these advisors who, again, were picked by JFK.

Johnson settles on a policy of gradual escalation.

And of course, in hindsight, right, he gets criticized a lot by the military.

But again, you know, context is everything, Don, right?

And when you look at the context at the time, it's perfectly sensible.

So on the one hand, right, if you make a dramatic escalation, you stand to compromise the whole domestic agenda.

Because then it looks like America is about to engage in a major war.

So then domestically, that completely derails Johnson's program.

So there's that domestic.
