And the instructions from Johnson are very clear.

Right.

And it's in that context, right, that so Westmoreland never says anything about the light at the end of the tunnel.

But he says, I think it's during a National Press Club speech, that the end is beginning to come into view.

So all of a sudden, hopes are raised.

And then 1968, that offensive, and then Johnson's credibility is completely shot.

But Johnson sets himself up for that failure, if you will.

If you take Vietnam out of the equation domestically, right, it's a very contentious situation.

We've got civil rights, right?

We've got the feminist movement.

We've got gay liberation is starting in the 60s.

The environmental movement is starting in the 60s, right?

So you've got all these various kind of these challenges to traditional America.

And then Vietnam gets added to that.

And Vietnam kind of becomes the common denominator, right?

All these groups.
