So Johnson was perfectly right to be cautious about everything.
But fundamentally, you know, the U.S.
just came up short in Vietnam militarily.
There are, as one of my colleagues likes to point out, there are limits to American power.
And Don, in all honesty, we've seen it ever since Vietnam.
And as Iran demonstrates, we have a big, bad military, but the results just have not been there.
So you can blame the civilians all you want.
But at this point, it's not just Vietnam that was lost.
It's Iraq, Afghanistan.
We can't claim victory there.
Iran, I mean, so the U.S.
is really good at bombing people, but bombing doesn't necessarily deliver the political goals.

I think that, you know, in all of these things, Johnson recognized that these limits to American power constrain the U.S.
to kind of get out of Vietnam and under Nixon, under presumably honorable terms.
It's interesting, Don, because, you know, as we mentioned at the beginning of the show, right, he's a tragic figure.
But if you were to take Vietnam out of the equation, he would be one of the greatest presidents in American history.
Most historians would probably rank him like number three after Lincoln and FDR, just because what he does domestically, it's so amazing.
It's really, I mean, it's remarkable, right?
