Like my memories of Glasgow are really highly saturated, which is not really an adjective to describe Glasgow because it's so gray.
Right.
But you know, it was an amazing time to be there and,
The artists that I met there are still the people that I see, you know, not every day, but very often.
You know, there's one of my friends, Alex Dordoway, is this amazing painter.
And, you know, like everyone's still making and it was transformational.
I think first would be Borges.
Just, again, the economy of the world-building that happens within a paragraph or a sentence.
Like, you know, the story of the map that ends up becoming as large as the territory it's mapping is still one of my favourite stories.
And I love it that you, what other piece of writing can become both a short story and an epigraph at the same time?
Who else?
I think one of the most important books to me is a book called The Return by Hisham Mattar.
who's a, I think, Libyan-British writer.
It came out in 2017, which is about around the same time that I lost my mum and the Philippines was kind of, it was under the Duterte presidency and it was really erupting into violence.
And so there was a sense of losing family, but also losing country, really.
And The Return talks about, it's a memoir, and it's his return to Libya, to Tripoli, after the fall of the Gaddafi regime.
And they left, I think, in the 70s.
But I think at some point while they were in exile in Egypt, his father was abducted, brought back to Libya, and they never saw him again.
And so this book is really about him coming to terms with that loss.
But also, like, it's just so beautifully written.
