I hadn't talked to him for years, but he followed me on LinkedIn, and I posted that I was going to a, I think it was a Tampa Bay Techies event.

He said,

Andy's going to that.

I'm going to go to that too and see what's up with him.

And we ran into each other.

We got to talk and I'm teaching at Hillsborough College.

He's at Microsoft now and a pretty big shot there.

And he says, you know, we've got this program, this mentor program.

We've been wanting to do it someplace in Florida.

And I said, I've got a place where you could do it.

And because of that, because of our professional network that we maintained,

This whole program erupted and has served a bunch of students last year, serving a bunch of students.

Even as I'm speaking to you right now, one of my students in one of my classes, I just rescheduled a meeting with her.

She said, I've got to do stuff for Microsoft today.

Nice.

That's what professional networking does.

I'm a big believer in this, and this is a regular lesson in my classes, especially programming classes.

I've had to suffer through existential dread like any dev has had to do, but I teach introductory programming.

Is what I'm teaching even matter?

It turns out it does.
