We still don't know everything about them, but there's some good emerging evidence to show that some detrimentally impact our microbiome, but there's others that would appear to be safe, like soy lessothin, which is actually one of the most common emulsifiers.
It's an emulsifier that's found in like egg yolk, also found in soy, and that's typically used by most manufacturers.
You also have colorants.
So these are to change the colour of the food.
Now you can have natural colourants and it's kind of a bit of a vague term, just 'cause it says natural colourant doesn't mean it's necessarily good for us.
But you can have natural colours like beta carotene.
vitamin A.
Yes.
Yes.
And so it gives the spread that nice yellow texture so it looks like butter, you know, instead of kind of a more white texture that it would have naturally.
Turmeric, these are are natural colourants, but then you have artificial colourins, you know, people often talk about the red dye, the blue dyes, you know, that we know that probably aren't so um healthy for us.
So there's emerging evidence that some emulsifiers, not all emulsifiers, can negatively impact our gut microbiome.
Um, there is some evidence that some other additives again may also negatively impact our gut microbiome.
may also negatively impact our metabolic health.
So things like our insulin sensitivity.
But it's very nuanced and it's different depending on the dose of the additive and the type of additive.
I think it's really important though, Jonathan, for people not to over worry in terms of some of the scaremongering that is out there around cancer, that it is very clear at normal intakes of all of these additives and emulsifiers.
There's been very good studies that show that they do not lead to cancer.
Um and I think that's the one thing that I'd worry about is that people suddenly become very frightened of food those.
caveat my caveat, Tim.
