There have been many family structures in human history.
There's been polygamy.
There's been matriarchies.
There's been Sparta, where the women were encouraged to have sex with more than one man in order to get lots and lots of sons, right?
Ours is not.
We have patrilocal, so mainly women moving into the male households.
Patriarchal, married women cannot have sex without being vilified.
Married men, they're being a bit of a lad.
But we have protocols, just as the ancient Greek did, like you don't bring your mistress from the other side of the city in.
to your household.
Your wife gets fundamental respect as running the household.
That's her domain, provided she keeps her legs together when you're off sailing, which of course Penelope famously does.
He is a different type of hero from the Iliad, and we can talk about that.
But he grows in this poem.
He grows up, and it's the education of Odysseus.
He goes from being a terrible leader who risks his own men's lives for reasons just to do with curiosity.
For example, he doesn't have to go to the Cyclops Island.
They've been on another island where they've replenished their water and food supplies.
