It's such an honour to be here.
Thank you so much for the invitation.
He absolutely is someone that most people are never going to have heard of.
Whereas if you say, well, I'm kind of writing about Alexander, I'd like to tell you about Alexander the Great, people are going to just put their head in their hands and be like, this guy, this guy again, again.
And all the way back to the ancient world, people were like, this guy again.
Even Arian, he opens his history by saying, well, why on earth does the world need another book about Alexander?
And that's in the first century.
But Diades is someone that very, very few people, even very few classicists, have heard much of or know much about.
But he's someone who really made possible some of Alexander's most spectacular victories.
And you could really say that without him, there is no Alexander the Great.
So he's someone whose ideas...
absolutely reshape reality.
And he does things that even from the perspective of the 21st century seem just absolutely barking.
You're reading this and you're like, no, no, no, that's not possible.
He did what?
He did what?
He did how?
He did why?
So he's someone who absolutely will not
He doesn't have that kind of sort of little checkpoint or trapdoor that most of us have in our minds, like when we have an idea that's completely, completely out there, and it sits around in our heads for a minute, and then we're like, no, no, no, no, that was just a bad idea.
