And they just brutally make their way through the city, killing men, women, and children, enslaving some women and children, burning houses.

There is so much anger, right?

There is so much anger.

And when Alexander feels his power totter, when he feels himself coming close to defeat, then he reacts with just extraordinary brutality, which is driven by the sense of the impermanence of his power, the fragility of his power.

The attacks that he unleashes after that, those moments of fragility, those moments of vulnerability, are the most brutal in his entire campaign.

And Tyre is perhaps the most brutal of them all.

Almost all of the men of fighting age are killed.

The women and children are enslaved, even dragged away from many of the temples and killed.

And then 2,000 of the surviving Tyrians are crucified.

Now this is an act of mass execution which takes huge amounts of time and resources and cold-blooded brutality, but it's a message, right?

It's a message to the rest of the Persian Empire, to Alexander's Greek allies.

Two thousand Tyrians are crucified in this

long, bleak line stretching along the shore, just one after the other, after the other, after the other.

And their bodies are just left up there.

And then Alexander walks into the temple of Melkart, into the temple of Heracles, and he makes his sacrifice.

And Tyre is left a depopulated ruin.

We know a little.

I think calling him, as scholars have, the man who took Tyre is more than just.

And Alexander essentially puts him to work solving impossible problems, solving problems which should not be solvable by ancient warfare.

So after Tyre, Alexander's army goes on down the coast to the last essentially Persian outpost on the road to Egypt, which is the city of Gaza.
