It's a miracle Darius is still in power.
He falls back to Babylon, tries to rebuild.
Alexander, rather than pursuing Darius to Babylon, rather than trying to end the war in one stroke, basically stays where he is and works his way gradually down the coast of Asia Minor, taking one city after another.
Some of them just open their gates.
Some of them surrender.
Some of them, however, put up a fight.
And it's the ones that really put up a fight.
It's the ones that absolutely close their gates and look over their walls with contempt at Alexander and his army, where deities and his genius really come into play.
Amazing.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Running, basically running down that coast, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, down towards modern day Egypt.
And it's that stretch of land which is sort of incredibly wealthy.
And it's sort of a bunch of cities which had changed hands historically between Greeks and Persians and intermediate regimes, and which had been the focus of a huge amount of rhetoric in Greece before the war, where Alexander claimed he was making war on Persia to liberate these cities, places like Byblos and Sidon and Halicarnassus.
both Greek and Phoenician cities, where Alexander is claiming that his war against Persia is this war of liberation.
So this part of the world is symbolically hugely important for the story Alexander's been telling about why he's launching this war and what this campaign is for.
So initially it goes almost suspiciously well for him.
In the couple of weeks after the Battle of Issus, basically everyone is so shell-shocked by the idea that the great king has been defeated by this unknown kid from the hills of Macedon.
