Why is Macedon
No one really puts up that amount of a fight.
So a lot of the Phoenician cities just fully open their gates and pro-Persian regimes are dismantled and alternative rulers are put in place.
But around a couple of months after the Battle of Issus, Alexander encounters a problem.
and it is an extremely large problem.
It's the city of Tyre.
Now, Tyre is a singular and remarkable city.
It's an island city.
Well, there's a bit of the city which is a kind of small settlement on the mainland, but then most of it is an island.
about a kilometer off the coast.
And it is one of the most strongly fortified places in the world at the time.
The island is surrounded by walls.
There's no place to land.
The shore is rocky.
The Tyrians have an extremely well-trained fleet which fully overmatches Alexander's.
He absolutely cannot float a boat without it getting just destroyed within minutes.
They have full control of the sea.
The city itself is far beyond the reach of even Diades' most up-to-date artillery, so
Alexander can throw all the rocks he wants from the mainland, but just everything's going to hit the sea.
Nothing's going to even scratch the walls.
