colonies throughout the Mediterranean, most famously Carthage.
So it has allies, it has friends, it has money, and it has absolutely no interest in opening its gates to Alexander.
Initially, it seems like everything's going to be fine.
Alexander sends envoys to Tyre, the Tyrians send envoys to Alexander, and everyone seems to be about to reach some kind of accommodation where Alexander can just
walk into the city, sacrifice in the great temple of Heracles or Melkart, as the Tyrians call the deity, the star-clad god, and everyone will be left to go about their business.
But through one of those things where, you know, the tone of a debate shifts or the mood in a city shifts, the Tyrians decide, you know what?
No, no, no.
To hell with that guy.
We're not going to open our gates.
We're not going to let you in.
We will not attack you, but we're not going to say anything nice about you.
We're not going to acknowledge your authority.
We're just going to sit on our island and basically see who wins this war.
And then we're going to see, maybe we'll let them in.
The Tyrians have no reason to think that Alexander can do anything about this.
They don't know that.
They, of course, have reports of Darius being defeated, but they don't have an accurate battle report.
