We've been in existence for 10 years now and we do early work on potential vaccine candidates against potential threats to human health because you want to be ready for the next outbreak.
Speed is everything.
With speed, you reduce mortality.
With speed, you get back to normal life.
And that's really our objective.
Correct.
I actually talk about speed, security, and by that I include safety, scale in order to save lives.
You need all of those dimensions.
Yes, precisely.
It's what I call the speed premium.
16 days after the outbreak was declared on the 15th of May, by the beginning of June, we had announced that we were going to fund three vaccine candidates.
We've actually increased that now to four.
And we said to ourselves, what will increase speed here?
The Oxford vaccine has now gone into phase one trials.
This is for safety?
This is for safety.
And at the same time, we moved and we funded what's called the vaccine, the seed, and we moved that to India, to the Serum Institute.
And we got them to produce 600,000 doses.
Because if that vaccine looks like it's going to be successful and we're going to run a proper clinical trial, you want those doses to be available as soon as it can be.
And in fact, we're already funding some other kinds of trials, particularly in respect to treatments, monoclonal antibodies, just to see whether that might be a way to mitigate the impacts while we're waiting for these vaccines to come.
