They experienced their children being taken from them.

They experienced what it was like to have the state make a decision about them because of who they loved and how they loved.

They had experienced the misogyny and lesbophobia of the state, even though they were not

people living with a condition that was causing them to waste away.

Yeah.

I mean, that just, it just proves the point that, I mean, I'm not saying that they were political operative, you know, like I'm not, but they had been politicized.

They had a consciousness about, um,

what it meant to be in this thing called a gay and lesbian community.

So those are the two that are part of it.

They understood that they had

that they were part of this.

And I bet among them were also many separatists who didn't name and embrace the possibility of having an alliance between gay men and lesbians.

So it's both.

Both of those things existed at the same time.

And we know that

In spaces like this, lesbians were at the forefront of caring for people dying from this thing called alternately gay-related immunodeficiency and AIDS.

So we were the people who were on the front lines of that.

Going into hospitals, taking care of people, being parts of buddy systems that brought food, helping people get to care, staffing hotlines, giving blood.

The thing that I think is important to know, and I'm hoping that you and I can take up in another podcast, is that, of course, lesbians were living with violence.

aids too and dying from aids also yes yes yeah often overlooked in this story but this one is about how much we were leading the charge to take care of people around our friends and and and comrades and family chosen and biological who were dying
