They're not using fear.
It's astonishing how much Lincoln avoids using fear to justify war.
He doesn't say, look how bad the Confederates are.
Look at all these things they're going to do to you.
He doesn't say that.
He instead asks us to look within to who we want to be,
and to fight for what we want.
And Washington is saying the same thing.
That's how you win wars.
You win the war by fighting for who you are, not fighting against who they are.
Exactly.
The beauty of the Gettysburg Address is that when a teacher reads it to students, for example, as you read it kind of as a teacher a few minutes ago, you're hearing it in a modern voice.
You're not hearing it in an archaic voice.
It's kind of cool to hear FDR's voice, but it's actually more powerful when someone takes those words and puts it to rap.
Or puts it to song, right?
I mean, that's the point, right?
And so every time you hear the Gettysburg Address, you're hearing it articulated, and it should be read to people.
You're hearing it in a modern voice, and it works.
Again, it's like playing the Beatles.
If you've got a good band, good cover band, it's not the Beatles, but it works, right?
