But it works.
Yes, absolutely.
There was such a sense of fear and anger at where the country was across parties, across perspectives.
Not everyone had confidence in Franklin Roosevelt.
In fact, most people probably didn't.
But he did have a mandate to try to address this problem.
Everyone agreed that the economy was not only in the garbage can, but that it was at the risk of reaching a point of no return and that our society could collapse.
I mean, people have to articulate and understand when you say one in four Americans didn't have a job,
Almost all families had a single breadwinner.
That person didn't have a job, and there was no federal at all, no federal support, and very few states offered unemployment and support.
People were going from being lawyers one day and accountants one day to being in a breadline the next day.
We cannot imagine that in our world.
And so Roosevelt did have a mandate, both as president and then with a new Congress, to address the issue.
And that's what his inaugural address is the opening move in that.
And that's where he came up with the phrase New Deal, just as you said, in the campaign.
That's a campaign speech.
It's around the time of the Democratic Convention, so summer elections.
of 1932, which is almost a year before he actually takes office.
We have to remember that at that time, presidents took office in March, not in January.
So the New Deal, as he described it, was just that.
