How he explained it to Americans was not that the government was going to come save you.

He never said that.

And that's not what happened.

He said, we're going to have a New Deal where the government will not just be out there doing things.

The government will come and work with you.

The government will be your partner

And you must partner with the government.

So if you do certain things, the government will be able to help you, jobs being the fundamental thing.

The government will come and create new jobs, but you have to be willing to work in those jobs.

It's a big myth that Roosevelt was giving handouts to people.

There was no handout at all.

The New Deal was a new way of thinking about partnership and work for pay with government.

Right.

And he's what he's arguing for is that just what you said, that we are holding ourselves back in part.

And his job is not to correct the mistakes, but to empower us to save ourselves.

That's really what he's saying.

I will help you to save yours.

I will help you to win the game, but you have to win the game.

And he says, after that wonderful opening, that sort of very father figure, and he embodies this.
