It had to be a moment.
And he had this extraordinary moment where there's a dedication of the...
graves of the cemetery at Gettysburg months after this incredibly bloody battle, 50,000 plus casualties in three days.
And so it gives him a moment to articulate what the war has become, not what it was in 1861, but what it has become in 1863.
And that's to rally the public and articulate not just why we're fighting, but what we are fighting for.
It was seen as a turning point battle.
I mean, in the sense Antietam in 1862 was a deadlier battle.
But this really broke the back of the Confederacy, the Gettysburg Battle did.
If the Confederates had won this battle, they might have had a straight shot coming from the North, ironically, to capture Washington, D.C., which was their goal.
So this really was a turning point, which is why Lee had considered a major speech as well.
Absolutely.
And the power of this speech is really not just in the moment.
It is true that it moves people in this moment.
And there's this irony that Edward Everett, this great orator, speaks for an hour and a half.
And then Lincoln speaks for a few minutes.
And everyone remembers what Lincoln said.
No one remembers.
In fact, I've written about this.
I've read the Everett speech.
I right now have forgotten what the speech is about.
