This was a movement called New Qing History.
There's a group, especially from North America, who began to study the Manchu language.
And it's brought a lot of new ideas.
sort of understandings about the Qing empire and also what came before it, what came after it.
And so Qing history becomes fraught to be debated in public.
There's been a move away in terms of popular culture.
And I'm thinking about movies and TV dramas away from the Qing dynasty.
This is with some states, I don't know if interferes is the right word, but encouragement, because they're uptight about telling the history of the Qing Dynasty.
Hanfu kind of slipped in partly to discourage popular talk about the Qing.
But of course, the people that you're interested in, the people who are interested in dressing up like princesses and the people we encounter in the streets are not the scholars.
It's just about China having a lot of history.
And having a lot of history means that China is a country with a long civilization and it needs to be taken seriously by the world.
The pride and patriotism makes so much sense.
There's cultural prejudice among young Chinese people.
I can see it in my own students.
I might try to discourage a little bit.
Once you feel too strongly about one place, you start to think about other places as just opposites or foils and not as complicated places.
And then you lose sight of how your own place is actually complicated.
