It's not trivial.
but it's far from universal.
Essentially there are two groups of stalkers.
There are the short-term harassers and stalkers who typically stalk for a few days, typically pick on strangers, they typically follow, approach, try and engage the person in conversation and occasionally repeatedly SMS or phone.
This tends to stop relatively rapidly, and the stalking ends.
The other group is much more long-term stalking.
If a stalker persists for more than two weeks, the chances are they're going to persist for at least six to 12 months.
Which of the two are violent?
Well, as you might expect, the ones who become violent are the long-term stalkers.
About 50% of stalkers are the brief harassers, and about 50% are the long-term real problems.
About 10% have a serious mental disorder.
Though they don't have serious mental illness, very few people who stalk are exactly well-balanced individuals.
They tend to be people who have difficulty with relationships, either the rather inadequate, shy, dependent types, or they tend to be the sort of arrogant, demanding individuals, very sensitive to their own rights and insensitive to the rights and prerogatives of others.
Difficult characters, but they're not actually mentally ill, most of them.
All different stalkers can sometimes convince those around them that in fact their beliefs are correct.
So we had one odd young man who'd become quite convinced that someone he really had no connection with whatsoever would be his future bride, that they were destined for each other, that he loved her so naturally she must love him.
The family were always worried about this young man.
They thought he'd never find anyone.
He'd never really managed to find a girlfriend.
And they were so delighted when he told them that he was engaged to be married, that they arranged the wedding and they...
