They would start looking at everything they could and they would find as much as they could about why the anxiety had arisen in this person.
And then they'd go from there.
My guess is it's becoming far more frequent over the last 10, 20 years and that's what's pushed it into prominence.
But also partly chance.
Media in particular became interested with those who pursued, constantly intruded on and occasionally attacked the famous, the so-called star stalkers.
And this group got a lot of publicity, and that's really where the name stalking began and where the studies began.
I mean, one of the best portrayals of stalking that we have in art was a film which was produced before we even had the word stalking, and that was Play Misty for me.
But once we began to publicise and start to understand stalking,
the people who pursued the famous.
It became increasingly clear that this was just the tip of an iceberg, a very large and sinister iceberg, which involved far wider sections of the community than just the famous.
It's associated with sending gifts from the innocuous chocolates to the far from innocuous coffins, pig's heads, etc.
Dead pets, subscriptions to pornographic magazines, underwear with little notes about how they're hoping to see you in this, etc., etc., etc.
Right across the whole gamut of the odd and the ordinary.
Ordering or cancelling goods on a person's behalf, typically pizzas in the middle of the night.
It's associated with threats and perhaps most importantly it's associated with both physical and sexual violence.
No.
That being said, out there in the community, somewhere between 5% and 10% of people who are stalked are going to be assaulted, and a number of them are going to be assaulted seriously.
And if we look at it the other way around, what proportion of serious sexual and physical violence is preceded by stalking?
Well, a significant proportion is.
So there is a very real association between stalking and threats and violence.
