But if they have an exacerbation, which might be caused by not taking their inhalers or caused by an infection or pollution, then you get swelling of the airways.
And those airways, being nice and wide, become very narrowed.
And patients get wheeze.
So you can imagine you get wheezy.
Does that sound like a wheeze?
Because the airways are narrowed, and that can be very dangerous in people who have a significant asthma attack.
So that's asthma.
The third is obviously lung cancer.
Vast majority caused by smoking, but it can be caused by other things such as pollution, such as some industrial exposures.
Lung cancer...
obviously has such a high mortality if it presents very late.
And there are new treatments which really do improve the outcome.
The treatment of lung cancer has changed dramatically over the last few years.
But also, and especially in the UK, there's a big program now to find lung cancer before people have symptoms.
So now, throughout the UK, many people with a relatively significant smoking history will be offered lung cancer.
a CT scan to try and identify a lung cancer before they get symptoms.
If you wait for coughing up blood or weight loss it's often fairly advanced whereas if you can find a small nodule and then remove it before it causes any problems then you can markedly improve survival and mortality is 20% better in people who undergo lung cancer screening than those who don't.
So we've talked about smoking.
And we all know smoking is bad.
There are other things which can cause respiratory disease.
