In other parts of the world, indoor cooking...
can produce COPD.
That causes irritation of the airways.
And you can have two main issues.
You can have one called chronic bronchitis.
Again, chronic means longstanding.
Itis means inflammation, appendicitis, tonsillitis.
So bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi.
So you'll have a productive cough.
And it also releases some enzymes
which cause damage to the lungs and makes holes in the lungs.
It looks a bit like Swiss cheese, and that's called emphysema.
So CAPD caused by smoking, significant limitation to people's exercise capacity, significant effect on the life expectancy.
That's number one.
Number two, asthma.
So asthma is a different beast, and it's very much an allergic disease.
So it's an allergic disease of the lungs.
So many people with asthma also have hay fever, eczema.
We get inflammation, an allergic inflammation within the lungs.
So people generally can be very well, have normal lung function.
