It affects everyone, but I think it's especially a tough line to walk for women. matched

I think there's this catch-22 for women that you're either too soft and weak and you use exclamation marks and you sound too chipper all the time and you're saying sorry too much or you're too aggressive and you're too forward and you're overstepping your boundaries. matched

Women especially can fall into that trap. matched

But to be sure, I also talk to men about how they walk this line as well. matched

It came from a speaking coach who I talked to, and she described it as that voice that you use when you would really love if the barista could refill the oat milk, please. matched

It's like a little bit timid. matched

It's meant to just lubricate, you know, a social situation. matched

And it makes sense sometimes, right? matched

Like, I don't think you should be yelling at your barista demanding oat milk. matched

But when you carry that over into the workplace, especially into situations where people are asking you for your opinion or you need to pitch something, defend something, it can be really confusing and ineffective. matched

Also just using your tone of voice to be the person that you want to be in that moment. matched

So the speaking coach had this exercise I thought was really interesting where you throw a pretend ball against the wall and match your tone of voice to its trajectory. matched

So you would throw it up and then hear how your voice goes up at the end and it sounds like you're asking a question and then you throw it down and you feel how your voice just peters out and the energy just leaves you. matched

And then you throw it straight across and you can feel how your words just stay constant. matched

There's a power. matched

Again, you're not being obnoxious or unfriendly, but there's a strength there. matched

And I think it's worth practicing that. matched
