I think of Temple Shalom on Lakeshore Drive in Chicago.

That was a very beautiful shul.

And I don't think that any of us can really fathom what the temple, what the Beit HaMikdash was back in these years when King Solomon built the temple.

This temple was really the epicenter and the hub and the central nervous system of Jewish life and Jewish legislature and Jewish faith and service and fate.

Everything wove around the temple.

Completely.

I don't understand it.

You don't understand.

None of us can.

It was apparently, it was so obvious.

It was sort of the touch point between the manifestation, the godifestation of God and holiness on earth.

I can't begin to wrap my head around what that means, but I can begin to wrap my head around the idea that losing it would create this complete tectonic shift in what it means to be in a world absent of this defining feature.

And the loss of an easy button for connection, as your son's teacher was saying.

And so what's interesting is that the question is asked in another Gemara, in another part of the Talmud, it's asked, well, why did this happen?

Because what happened?

Babylonia, led by Nebuchadnezzar,

comes in and conquers Jerusalem, destroys the temple.

This is around 586 BCE.

There's always some debates with dates, but we're going to say it's around that time.

And the question is asked, why?
