Right.
But we are also saying, what have we been doing?
That is just part of the DNA of being part of this tradition, is that we don't just believe that evil, terrible things happen.
We also believe, what were we doing also?
Again, it doesn't give a pass to anyone who did anything horrific.
It's just saying, what are we doing as well?
And there's a rabbi who he passed away in 2009, but he wrote this incredible book that I love.
This is the time of year to read it.
His name is Rabbi Alan Liu, L-E-W.
It's called This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared.
He actually suggests that you start reading his book right at this time.
He kind of feels like this is a spiritual journey.
It first starts with a national journey of introspection.
Tisha B'Av should be a day of national recognizing, national responsibility, and national reckoning.
And then it culminates toward the end of, when we get to Yom Kippur, then we're doing that very much on a personal level.
How do I start to hold myself accountable to levels that I would like to get to?
But I like that what Rabbi Lew says, he has a famous quote where he says, spiritually, the question about any conflict that we encounter, any recurring catastrophe that we experience, we need to say, what is my responsibility?
How am I complicit?
How can I prevent this from happening again?
